The SC Center for Rural and Primary Healthcare Summer Fellowship Program is designed to cultivate student interest in improving health outcomes in rural South Carolina. The program provides undergraduate students with hands-on experience working on projects that promote health equity, strengthen healthcare delivery, and examine trends affecting access to care in rural communities.
This fellowship offers meaningful opportunities for students who are exploring a wide range of healthcare-related disciplines, including clinical and non-clinical career paths. Fellows will gain valuable professional experience while participating in mentorship and networking opportunities with leading health organizations across the state.
This is a paid, 9-week in-person summer fellowship program running from June 1, 2026, through July 31, 2026. Fellows will receive a $2,500 stipend for their participation.
What Do Fellows Do? Fellows will support Center staff with ongoing programs and research initiatives, participate in rural site visits to include some clinical shadowing, engage in service projects, and gain exposure to healthcare professionals through structured networking opportunities. Each fellow will be supported by experienced staff mentors who will help build professional skills, provide insight into rural health challenges, and offer guidance on academic and career planning.
The program includes a comprehensive orientation session and a “Lunch and Learn” speaker series focused on rural and primary healthcare topics, as well as personal and professional development. Fellows should expect to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week.
Who Is Eligible? The program is open to rising sophomore and rising junior undergraduate students from any academic discipline. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate a strong interest in learning about rural health.
Application Process: The application deadline is March 6, 2026. Applicants must complete the online application form, upload a resume and transcript, and submit one letter of recommendation. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in an interview prior to final selection.
